Birmingham Bouldering Centre

a1sx2_Thumbnail1_2014-09-07-14.06.03.jpgEver since started climbing about 4 months ago, I haven't stopped. This is a sport that I would like to see more of my friends doing. It is fun, challenging and has a great sense of accomplishment when you complete a route. This kind of activity is very sociable as we can chill and chat with friends while having a good work out.

Where the...

Situated under a subway near Snowhill station, we found this place while on the way to my first Capeiro Dance class. It is much smaller than Boulder Central where I usually climb, but this place has it's own appeal.

I've met John who is a university student and he does a lot of outdoor climbing. Recently we've met Chris, Jasmine and Milo. Chris is like a pro climber and does V6-8+ level. He makes climbing look so easy, SICK! Extremely enthusiastic and passionate in everything he does, He's also the drummer for a local band called "Oceans Ate Alaska". We're going to meet up again to try something called 'Slack-lining' that I've only just heard off. It looks really fun and dangerous at the same time!

The good

a1sx2_Thumbnail1_2014-09-25-16.48.21.jpgBeing very close to where I live made it very convenient to go alone if I had to.

They have a good training area upstairs with lots of different finger strength and upper body training equipment.

The staffs are always helpful and friendly, as with most of the climbing places I've been.
I've made more friends here and everyone just seems to help each other when they see another struggling on a route.

Being smaller in size, it has a sense of closeness that I like and you can't avoid not saying "hi" to everyone!

When it comes to the routes and challenges set, I actually find it a little more fun at Birmingham Bouldering Centre compared to Boulder Central. It's difficult to fully explain my reason, but there seems to be more variation of techniques on every route. Each route seems to help develop a different technique and it doesn't feel like the same problems being solved over and over again.

There seems to be more side ways and swirly routes. Maybe because it is smaller, so lesser routes, meaning more time to think how to make each challenge more fulfilling. Some may not agree, being only an amateur, this is just my opinion!

The bad

a1sx2_Thumbnail1_2014-09-07-14.06.16.jpgI do wish this place would be brighter inside. This is probably due to the positioning of the lights being blocked by the climbing features.

What would make this place kickass is if they had an actual boulder simulation where you can overclimb onto the top and an area for climbing upside down routes like in a cave! The reason for having those set of challenges, it will help develop a different set of muscles essential for climbing. I know boulder central has both of these! Maybe I'm wishing far too much.

They don't have a designated children's beginner area but if your kid(s) are pretty good at climbing, then they probably enjoy it here. I've not experienced this place with children's party going on, so can't comment whether it can be disruptive with adults climbing within the same area.
